I started putting these together on Sunday nights so I would have them ready for the week. We worked our way through the alphabet slowly, sometimes spending more than one day on a letter. I introduced upper and lowercase at the same time, and always the sound along with the letter identification.

Here's the list of items I always included on my letter trays:

  1. bin large enough to house various materials

  2. letter book from the series My First Steps to Reading by Jane Belk Moncure (found the set at a thrift store)

  3. sand tray from Target

  4. small objects with beginning sound

  5. cardboard square to practice tracing the letter and glue loose parts (see post on Word Wall)

  6. manipulatives such as playdoh, cutting practice, Duplos
